Fashion 411: Shop the Shoot from Saks

I'll be the first to admit it. As much as I love fashion, I hate trying to keep up with trends. Quite frankly, I'd rather spend my free time taking a nap or catching up on Parks & Recreation episodes on the web than flipping through pages of fashion magazines or department store catalogs. That's why online advertorials like "Shop the Shoot" from Saks.com are such a welcome find. In 45 seconds or less, Saks and one of 15 contemporary designers show and tell us how to put together a fun, new look for the season.

Fashion 411 features helpful tools or resources to help follow the latest and greatest trends in all things fashion.

Best and Worst Ways to Spend a Fortune on Fashion (BG Spring 2010: Neutral Dress Edition)

Best: Valentino, $4,590.
Why? Eternal class has a name, and its name is Valentino. It’s like Audrey Hepburn meets Zooey Deschanel. Gotta love it.

Worst: Haute Hippie, $695.

Why? Please, save your money. You can buy this at Wet Seal for $23.99 in the Soon-to-Be Teen Mom Prom section.

Best and Worst Ways to Spend a Fortune on Fashion is a pretty self-explanatory series on the good, the bad, and the ugly of haute couture.

Best and Worst Ways to Spend a Fortune on Fashion (BG Spring 2010: Swimwear Edition)

Best (Tie): Emilio Pucci, $330 (left). Oscar de la Renta, $750 (just below). Why? Supposedly, blue is big this season. Regardless of where your tastes fall on the color wheel, these bathing suits are just plain pretty. The one on the left is perfect for adolescents, Europeans, and plastic surgery enthusiasts, while the one below it is perfect for the rest of us.

Worst: Missoni, $672.
Why? Missoni does a lot of things right. For example: sweaters, caftans, and even some dresses. Unfortunately (sigh), swimwear is not one of those things. You know your nice, elderly neighbor who crochets coasters in her spare time? Rumor has it that Missoni discovered her talents at last year’s neighborhood yard sale and hired her to design this swimsuit.

Awesome or Out There: Melissa Shoes

The product/service up for debate is: Shoes by Melissa

Featuring such guest designers as Kahim Rashid, Zaha Hadid, and most recently, Vivienne Westwood, Melissa uses a patented plastic called Melflex (likened to a jelly) to make what some claim are the world's most comfortable shoes. Melissa shoes are sold at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue, among other places. The Jelly Oxford pictured third below was chosen as the 2009 Design Award for Best Travel Accessory by Travel & Leisure magazine.

For more information, visit the official website.

So what do you think? Are these awesome? Or just plain out there?

Sweet Spots: Hotel 41

Today, I asked M the following question: "If someone told you that you could have an all-expenses paid trip to one hotel/resort in the world, where would you stay?" He replied, without hesitating, "Hotel 41". We actually stayed here over Christmas last year (and it's the Real McCoy), so here's the low down on this Sweet Spot.

The Website: www.41hotel.com

The Location: London, England. Steps from Buckingham Palace and Victoria Station.

The Atmosphere: Über-classic with a modern twist. Rooms feature black-and-white-heavy design. Public spaces feature dark wood paneling with floods of natural and incandescent light. Despite the hotel's very formal appearance, it has a home-away-from-home feel that appeals to the international business traveler and yuppie family alike.

The Unique Appeal: First-class service all the way. Free afternoon snacks and plunder the pantry feature, both with ample options. The fireplace and skylight in the executive lounge. Nightly turn-down service with hot water bottles, classical music, and chocolates. Walking into the lobby on the street level and taking the elevator up to the 5th floor to get to your room and the executive lounge.

The Word: Posh.

The Best Rates: Well-priced auctions are sometimes listed on Luxury Link (www.luxurylink.com). Otherwise, booking through I Prefer (www.iprefer.com) will likely offer the lowest price.

Sweet Spots is a series designed to highlight various hotels and resorts throughout the world that we think are, well, pretty sweet.

Travel Tips: What To Do In Emergencies

I recently came across an interesting article on what to do in travel emergencies. Here are my three favorite tips:
  1. Email yourself copies of important documents. Most people know to travel with copies of important documents, such as passports, credit cards, and reservation confirmations; however, simply emailing yourself these documents helps cut down on travel clutter and ensures that you can access them from anywhere with an internet connection.
  2. Register your trip with the government for free (here). Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency.
  3. Never pack cash, jewelry, electronics, or artwork in checked luggage. Most airlines do not cover these items if lost or stolen, even though jewelry and electronics are the items most likely to "disappear".

Best and Worst Ways to Spend a Fortune on Fashion (BG Spring 2010: Handbag Edition)

Best: Dior, $2,700.

Why? Because – like a mortgage – you will have this amazing bag for the next 30 years of your life. That equals an investment of roughly $0.25 a day. Doesn’t sound like much when you put it that way, does it? Side note: I think this bag would look even better in black, which it comes in, but couldn’t find a picture of online.

Worst (Tie): Both Dian von Furstenburg, $ 875 (left), $725 (below).

Why? You might think that I photo-shopped two handbags that I found on a clearance rack at a flea market onto a Bergdorf backdrop, but I assure you that I did not. These little gems are from DVF's latest collection titled, “Fast Times at Ridgemont (you must be) High (to buy one of these hideous handbags).”

Best and Worst Ways to Spend a Fortune on Fashion (BG Spring 2010: Shoe Edition)

Best: Christian Louboutin, $695.

Why? Oh la Loubotin! I imagine this shoe would look equally great on Jane Russell (circa 1953), Lady Gaga, and Nancy Pelosi. Truly, a shoe for all women – all women who can maneuver in a 5” stiletto heel, that is. This shoe carries a high-volume vamp factor without necessarily crossing into tramp territory.

Worst: Silvia Fiorentina Spiga Viperino, $635.

Why? When I saw this shoe, I thought to myself, “Oh, this poor ugly shoe.” I started laughing when I saw it and am still laughing now as I write about it. Though in all fairness, I bet Chuck Bass could totally pull it off.
